Hawkins takes silver from East Moline Speedway Sport Compact

By Rob Hinckley for Local 4 News

Four cars wide, dirt running off the tires and fast-paced competition are not uncommon for the Riverbend Pizza Place Sport Compacts at East Moline Speedway.

On Sunday night, that was taken to a new extreme in the battle for extra cash.

Cyle Hawkins passed visitor Rick Zifko about halfway through and headed into the 20-lap stage. He collected $500 for his efforts on the high-banked, quarter-mile oval beating Zifko, Michael Snyder, Tommy Staggs and Jason Rhoads.

“I was happy to be able to run the bottom (groove). That zero car (Zifko) was fast.

The Blue Grass, Iowa ace also won his round, as did Zifko, Aurora, Illinois. “We have worked hard to prepare for this. I cannot thank my family enough for all they do.

The defending track champion again leads in track points with two weeks left in the regular season.

Dustin Forbes rolled his car during his heat race, but was uninjured.

Andy Nezworski flew off the post and headed for the Eriksen Chevrolet IMCA Late Model feature. The 25 laps were shortened to 16 laps due to a second downpour hitting the track. Matt Ryan started seventh and worked to take second ahead of Joe Beal, Mack Mulvany and Mike Haines.

Sixth-placed Jacob Waterman and Ryan are both top-five in IMCA national points, but Ryan holds a two-point advantage on the track before that.

EMS is a perfect framework for J&J Camper Sales IMCA Modifieds. They did not disappoint again with Travis Denning taking another 20 lap final. The peloton spread across the race surface, but the competitiveness was strong as Mitch Morris, BJ Jackson, Brandon Durbin and Austin Becerra trailed the winner.

Denning ranks top five in IMCA National Points

Ryan Reed started on pole position and took the Legacy Corporation IMCA SportMod 15-lap finish ahead of Chuck Fox, Keith Wiersema, Jesse Bodin and Josh Marth. Several caveats again plagued the event.

With the biggest Street Stock race in the region just weeks away, competition was tough in Dynamic Power Street Stocks.

Robert Cottom led all 15 home runs, beating Rob Henry, Jesse Owen, Rob Nylin and Pete Odell in the caution-filled event.

Street Stocks are featured on Sunday, September 4 in the annual Fallen Heroes Memorial, typically paying out $2,000 to the winner and cars from at least three states.

Brandon Freeburg won County Waste Systems’ IMCA Mod Lites 15-round finale, a week before the division’s season championship night. Point leader Jon Padilla settled for third place. He and second-place finisher RJ Gonzales will fight for the track championship, separated by just three points heading into this event. Jacob Copley and Jason Masengarb complete the top five.

Bryan Wonick went upside down during the feature, but was also unharmed.

Randy Lamar once again topped Rudy’s Tacos IMCA Hobby Stock feature by 12 rounds. Logan Gustaf, Michale Putt, Donnie Cole and Josh Lane followed. Lamar is also near the top of the national IMCA rankings.

A total of 96 cars were in the pits and the final checkered flag fell around 9:30 p.m. despite a pair of rain delays.

The 2022 season continues next Sunday, August 21, with all seven regular stock car classes in action, along with the return of Kids Mods and it will be the championship night of the season for the County Waste Systems IMCA Mod Lites.
